With the establishment of a comprehensive 3R network covering all major biomedical sites in the state, Baden-Württemberg is taking a new approach to improving scientific research and animal welfare in equal measure ...
On May 12th + 13th, 2022, the 3R-Center Tübingen organized on behalf of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (MWK) for the first time the two-day 3R-Annual Conference of the 3R-Network Baden-Württemberg on the topic Replacement, Reduction and Refinement – 3R of animal testing. With exciting keynote lectures, oral and poster presentations, the event in the Old Anatomy of the Medical Faculty of the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen offered plenty of opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange between 3R-actors from different disciplines and thus represented an important contribution to better networking among Baden-Württemberg researchers as well as to the professional dialogue among each other.
To ensure that animal welfare is continuously addressed in research, education and training, politics as well as by the general public, the biomedical expertise of researchers in the state is bundled in the 3R-Network Baden-Württemberg and the visibility of the activities is increased for example through public relations work or special course offerings for education and training. The basic framework of the network is formed by five 3R-Centers, each of which acts as a kind of crystallization core for the further expansion of the network. The work of the centers is complemented by Baden-Württemberg researchers who are pursuing three research projects as well as two educational projects in order to structurally anchor replacement- and supplementary methods and the 3R-Principle.
With the aim of reducing the number of animal experiments and further improving animal welfare, a new network is being created in Baden-Württemberg ...

The recently founded Würzburg Initiative 3R (WI3R) has announced its 1st International Conference taking place on the 5-7th of June 2024 at the Rudolf Virchow Center in Würzburg (Germany). WI3R bundles the Bavarian activities in the field of 3R from science, regulatory authorities and industry and networks with existing 3R centers in Germany, Europe and worldwide. The event is co-organized by the Fraunhofer TLC-RT, the German Research Foundation (DFG) funded research clusters SFB/TRR 225 ("From the fundamentals of biofabrication towards functional tissue models"), GRK2157 (3D-Infect) and SFB 1583 (Decide) of University Hospital and University of Würzburg as a joint event. Within the 1st WI3R symposium the German Research Foundation (DFG) will grant the 10th anniversary of the Ursula M. Händel Animal Welfare Prize. The prize recognizes scientists who have made exemplary and sustained efforts to improve the welfare of animals in research. The €80,000 prize is currently the largest prize of its kind in Germany, awarded every two years. Please find more information about the objectives of the event, the speakers and the preliminary program on the webpage.
On June 15th and 16th 2023, the ICGH and the 3R Center Rhein Neckar are organizing on behalf of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (MWK) the second 3R-Annual Conference of the 3R-Network Baden-Württemberg in Heidelberg and Mannheim. Further information will be provided soon.
The annual conference 2022 of the 3R-Network Baden-Württemberg will take place this year on May 12 and 13, 2022 in Tübingen. In the course of the event, the scientists funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (MWK) Baden-Württemberg will present their respective project progress. In addition to these reports from the ten groups funded to date, the conference will provide ample opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange, exciting poster presentations, constructive discussions and networking activities, in addition to presentations by renowned (inter)national 3R experts. Young researchers from the 3R field are especially invited to attend.
We are looking forward to an exciting conference program with leading (inter)national experts sharing and discussing their latest advances around the 3Rs.
